The NEW Coatesmans CDR4 Devilfish Speargun - Shore Dive Spearfishing 4K
Sneak Peak at the COATESMAN'S 130 CDR4 DEVILFISH Speargun 8mm Shaft Setup.
Speargun Specs:
Barrel: CDR4 DEVILFISH 8mm Barrel - Timber & Carbon hybrid construction.
Mech and Reel: Rob Allen Vecta2 + HD Mech
Muzzle: COATESMAN'S CDR4
Shaft: 1.7m 8mm Double Rollerfin Double Barb Coatesmans Shaft.
Band Set up: 14mm bands at 75cm
The goal of the DEVILFISH series was to create a speargun that could accurately shoot an 8mm shaft at high speed with one hand. To achieve this, the gun needed enough weight to counter the inertia of the heavy 8mm shaft. The Timber & Carbon construction adds both buoyancy and weight, providing the necessary weight to sufficiently blast the gun.

    Hey Chris, grateful for all the testing, investigating and sharing you do. I’d love your input on a setup I’m refining, I have a 110 double roller made by torelli in Australia. It came with 16mm bands on it, set up to be hand loaded. I’m wanting to power them up to be load assist loaded, Usually it shoots a 1.5mm 8mm drop barb shaft at big fat southern bluefin tuna in ~10-18C water. Do you think 2x 16mm at full pretension would overpower the shaft? What length and pretension would you go? It already had a bit of kick when fire, and it’s a heavy gun. Carbon but barely neutrally buoyant with just rubbers on and no spear Im currently in indo in 28c water and wanting to put a single 14mm hand load rubber on and shoot 6.5 and 7mm shafts. I’ll build this to your standard specs. Looking forward to feeling how it shoots

      Hey Daniel, I am not 100% on the setups in 10deg water. The tests I have been doing are between 19-26deg C. In my experience the double overpowers the 8mm shaft with 14mm bands at 380% I use 14mm bands at 350% for the 8mm shafts. For a gun to have enough ballast to handle the inertia of the shaft the gun needs a fair amount of buoyancy. I dont think your gun has enough buoyancy and ballast weight to handle the 8mm shaft. Probably better with a 7.5mm or 7mm as you are thinking. Let me know how it goes

    Hye, can you elaborate on the movement I see the gun is making twice in the video after you pull the trigger. Looks like it shocks left up? Any lead in the front or back of the gun?

    • @CoatesmansSpearfishing
      @CoatesmansSpearfishing 24 дня назад

      If you look carefully (i need to put up video from the pool in slow motion) the movement on the gun is only once the shaft has left the gun. The twist to the left is because I am right handed and the gun lifting is the buoyancy of the gun once the shaft has left the muzzle.

    The gun looks amazing and looks to perform very well. 75cm band length is back to the half barrel plus 10 method. Is this because your using the 8mm shaft now? The previous CDR guns had 80-85cm band length. But with 7.5mm shafts. I just build a 1300 double roller using your graph for the band length at 85cm. I am using 7.5mm shafts with it. Just interested to here the reasoning for the build. Love your stuff and I have built all my rollers to the way you set up yours.

    • @CoatesmansSpearfishing
      @CoatesmansSpearfishing 24 дня назад

      Hey Andrew, After lots of pool testing and measuring the velocities of the shafts with different setups I have settled with the following formulas. Single rollers: 14mm - half barrel + 5cm 16mm - half barrel + 10cm Double rollers: 7.5mm shaft / 14mm - half barrel + 20cm 8mm shaft / 14mm - half barrel + 10cm

    But we know that there is such a thing as terminal velocity in the shaft, so I’m not sure why power would be a good indicator of anything. But the graph is useful as you say to illustrate the low recoil of the roller. My take is still that a well setup traditional gun can be in the same ballpark as a roller, as I’d say Rob Allen’s video indicated, and if you had a well setup traditional gun with a reverse mech then the results become even closer. But yes recoil is a real consideration no doubt. I personally think the real question is if the extra cost and and complexity of rollers is worth the effort, since we know a traditional gun can get a shaft moving at terminal velocity quite easily. But I’d say rollers would tend to be more accurate due to the low recoil. I just think the “performance” of the roller vs traditional is overemphasized in the video.

    • @CoatesmansSpearfishing
      @CoatesmansSpearfishing 25 дней назад

      Hey @kayb4995 You are right about the power or load not being a good indicator for performance. These videos are old and our understanding of the physics of spearguns has evolved. That said this still does effectively show how the load is distributed when driving the shaft. And this affects recoil. The term terminal velocity is a bit misleading. As this referse to the max speed the shaft can travel in water. Which is much faster than a speargun can shoot it. The speed of the shaft is determined & limited by the 'Snap Back Velocity' of the rubber. The shaft is limited to the max contraction speed of the rubber. So this is where you are correct in saying that a conventional gun and roller gun should have no significant 'speed' performance benefit over each other. As you can get both guns to drive the shaft at the max 'Snap Back Velocity' of the rubber. The issue is recoil, and you can shoot a shaft from a roller at higher speeds because of the lower recoil. (for a number of reasons) This is essentially what makes rollers better than conventional guns. And even though this video is old and does not take the rubber speed into consideration. The principals still hold true to how the energy is delivered.

      @@CoatesmansSpearfishing in your estimation why would so many commercial divers use traditional thought. I feel like even a very high % of them use traditional. Do you think this is just thrm being acquainted with the equipment. Idk I just feel like if what you claim about roller were true all competitors and commercial guys would realize that and use them. Do you have a guess as to why that’s not the case?

    • @CoatesmansSpearfishing
      @CoatesmansSpearfishing 22 дня назад

      There is some truth to this. But pretty much everyone of the commercial and competitive guys I have dealt with have converted and not gone back (bar some really old school guys who cant get over a short shaft over hang). For the most part the difference in the shot is only noticed when the guys go back to their old guns. Thats when you notice how the lack of recoil improves pretty much everything about the shot. On the small / short guns where recoil is not an issue on the conventional guns. An argument could be make that the conventional guns are very effective and very efficient. But have you ever shot a really well setup 90cm roller? Its like the difference between running in slippers or running shoes. Rollers just feel so much nicer. I also think there are many guys who feel that loading a roller is slower than a conventional gun. And so the competitive and commercial guys have lent towards conventional guns. But this is only because most roller set ups are shit and hard to load. I have proven over and over that there is no difference in time to load the equivalent performing gun wether it is a conventional or roller. Infact the double roller is way easier than a double band gun shooting the same shaft. The old school conventional guns are also cheaper. They are also easier to maintain. So this is a big factor too for commercial guys.

    • @kayb4995
      @kayb4995 20 дней назад

      @@CoatesmansSpearfishing good analysis. Idk is the truth. I saw the commercial guy from Florida “key west waterman” said he doesnt know a single commercial spearfisherman (in FL I assume?) that uses a roller. I believe you about the loading times, but that almost makes the argument for rollers worse; meaning these guys will likely know what they are doing so I assume they’d be able to get loading down. But yes I think there are a lot of misunderstandings on both types of guns when it comes to ideal setups. Your rollers are looking pretty spiffy in that regard.

    I’m not sold myself. I think a well set up traditional gun will perform well enough to make the roller juice not worth the squeeze. But if someone is super into low recoil that can be a thing no doubt.

    @chris please help. Would you rather have a 1100 or 1200 with your recommended set ups for each in Hawaii? Shooting mostly reef fish under 5kg? But see the occasional 10kg+ (uku) jobfish and Ulua (giant trevally).Very clear water 90m viz. I use a conventional 120 double band. Would you say 1100 roller is equivalent in power and range with 7mm and 14mm bands? I value speed of Loading and minimal gear.

    • @CoatesmansSpearfishing
      @CoatesmansSpearfishing 2 месяца назад

      Hey Karl, I would tend to lean towards the 120cm just because of the hitting power at range over the 110. Between the Uku, Ulua and even Wahoo that you get there the 120 with 7.5mm shaft is going to be better. The only issue is you will need a load assist or go double roller so you can hand load.

    Coats would you consider doing it on ermes double roller head or Rob Allen notched drop barb? My ermes front rubber wishbone tends to fly forward ahead of top bracket but I guess I can try to shorten it even more...I though about doing a double front rubber wishbone but I'm a bit worried it might interfere with notch on the back... I though of polishing the top of the notches on my RA drop barb a bit so it has less surface area to hold the wishbone too as they have quite aggressive overhang If the rubbers for some reason are missloaded on improper notches the effect of shaft being whipped up the muzzle increase 10 folds xD I had a client that would load them other way around couse it was too inconvienent. 😂

    • @CoatesmansSpearfishing
      @CoatesmansSpearfishing 2 месяца назад

      With the angle of the Ermes roller muzzles rails and the std RA notch it is best to load on an uneven wishbone to reduce the shaft lifting at the muzzle. This should also negate the need to modify the notches.
